Even in the midst of a heatwave, fashion insiders are holding tight to their love of denim-on-denim. The so-called Canadian tuxedo has made its return once again, right in time for the late-summer style shift. Living in NYC, I see it constantly—on subways in Brooklyn, on the streets of SoHo—head-to-toe denim is everywhere. What once felt bold and unexpected when I first moved here now feels like a signature uniform among the city’s effortlessly cool crowd. The double-denim trend first gained traction in the 1950s, thanks in part to Marilyn Monroe’s iconic look in The Misfits (1961). It quickly became the go-to outfit for the stylish set, offering a relaxed, easy confidence. We saw its evolution through the decades—from oversized denim looks dominating ’90s MTV to Naomi Campbell’s unforgettable full-denim moment on Tom Oldham’s S/S 1997 runway. And of course, who could forget Britney and Justin’s now-legendary denim duo at the 2001 American Music Awards? With fashion moving at breakneck speed today, it’s no surprise the trend has resurfaced for 2025.
